Genuine Texas Souvenirs

In Texas jargon, all hat and no cattle is a derogatory term.  It means all show and no substance.  The cowboy hat came into existence for a utilitarian purpose.  It kept a blazing hot sun off your face and it kept the rain from running down inside your search.  It also served to hold water for your horse, and as a feeding container for the oats you fed your horse.  The old expression "hat in hand" always bring to my mind, the picture of a nervous cowboy in an old western standing in front of the pretty school marm, shifting his weight from one foot to the other while trying to get his nerve up to ask her to the bard dance. 
Cowboy hats had such a place in life, they also contributed to the language of the west.  When you saw a character in a movie with a black cowboy hat, you just knew he was a bad guy while the man in the white cowboy hat was a good guy.  Did you ever see any of those saloon brawls where there were 87 people after the cowboy in the white hat, he beat them all and never lost his cowboy hat, and his gun never ran out of bullets.
One of the most popular hats, the Stetson, has its own place in the jargon.  The Stetson brand is worn to fancy balls as well as brawls.  Stetsons are expensive and must be cleaned and blocked by an expert in the process.
